Best Free Disk Defraggers

A short Introductory……….

The content of cognition behind file defragmentationis an easy pat on the shoulde and not involved or complicated. Work done inaddition to regular working hours as a disk drive become full and space becomeshard to find files may have to be stored in several separate physical locationson the drive rather than in a single Very close or connected in space or timelocation. the normal course of event activities such as creating, modifying anddeleting files further add to this process of Destroy the completeness offiles.

This separation and fragmentation of files intoseparate bits on a disk is called fragmentation. Fragmentation Lower the gradeof disk performance because it takes longer to Get or find back a file thatLacking orderly continuity in pieces all over a hard drive than it does toretrieve one that is located in a single location.

File defraggers work by Examining minutely orintensely the disk and Cause to move, both in a concrete and in an abstractsense into a certain direction together all the divide into components or constituents bits. With regard to fundamentalsalthough not concerning details ,this should make better performance.

However with Belonging to the modern era multi-headdisks with large buffers and having the capacity for thought and reasonespecially to a high degree electronics this gain is limited in size or scope thanwe might think, often only a few percent.

Belonging to the modern era defraggers however, domore than defragment; they also attempt to modifyto achieve maximum efficiency in storage capacity or time or cost file locationfor maximum performance. Different products use different optimization methodsbut a common technique is to place the most frequently used files at the outeredge of the hard drive where data transfer rates are highest due to the higherrotational speed of the disk.

The defragmentation will just about  improve process or manner of functioning oroperating..As a rule , users tend to build an appraisal that is too high thegains .In practical applications a drive in a home PC that is defragmenteddaily is unlikely to show capable of being detected gain over one that isdefragmented weekly. What is true is that a drive that have at no time in thepast or future been defragmented will show genuine performance gains when it isfirst defraggedBy contrast; on the other hand subsequent regular defrags mayproduce only just barely adequate or within a lower limit further or added  gains.

In my accumulation of knowledge or skill that resultsfrom direct participation in events or activities, monthly defrags are about goodfor the average user. Addition defrags produce limited or below average innumber or quantity or magnitude or extent performance improvement but can decreasein value of an asset due to obsolescence or use on your disk. The totality of surrounding conditions that demandvery high disk process or manner of functioning or operating may derive abenefit from from more regular defrags .

WhyDefragment Disks?

Hard disks are by far the slowest component in your computer. CPU and memory work much fasterthan hard disks because they do not have moving parts. Therefore fragmenteddisks often become a bottleneck of the system performance.

Besides causing slowdowns, fragmentation makes the hard drive disk heads move frequently when readingfiles which leads to freeze-ups and system crashes. It is important to keepyour disks defragmented and optimized as much as possible.

Fragmentation is caused by creating and deletingfiles and folders, installing new software, and downloading files from theInternet. Computers do not necessarily save an entire file or folder in asingle space on a disk; they’re saved in the first available space. After alarge portion of a disk has been used, most of the subsequent files and foldersare saved in pieces across the volume.

When you delete files or folders, the empty spaces leftbehind are filled in randomly as you store new ones. This is how fragmentationoccurs. The more fragmented the volume is, the slower the computer’s file inputand output performance will be.

Defragmentation is the process ofrewriting non-contiguous parts of a file to contiguous sectors on a disk forthe purpose of increasing data access and retrieval speeds. Because FAT andNTFS disks can deteriorate and become badly fragmented over time, defragmentation is vital for optimal system performance.

FreeDisk Defragmenters

1. Windows’ Disk Defragmenter:

Many people use within normal everyday experience; common and ordinary;not strange with Windows’ DiskDefragmenter . It uses existing as an essential constituent orcharacteristic Windows’ inbuilt GUI; not designed for physical appearance. Itis plain, but simple and having precise or logical relevance to the matter athand. The legend is comprised of four colors, giving a vague, visualrepresentation of fragmented files, contiguous files, system files, and freespace on the drive.

Inbuilt on windows

2.DIsckeeper Lite:

The next product was DiskeeperLite version 7, an older, a  prominent aspect of something reduced from versionof the commercial Diskeeper 2007 program. This product is Not now availablefrom the Diskeeper site but is obtainable or accessible and ready for use orservice from many download sites.

 Freeware, all Windows versions,12.1MB

You can get version 9 of DiskeeperLite. It forms an element  of Intel’slarge (89MB) Desktop Utilities package which can be downlaodable from the Intelsite below . If you unzip the file you’ll see Diskeeper V9 Lite in the folder../3rdparty/Diskeeper/. I it seems perfectly legitimate way to obtain theprogram on a single computer . Download from here .   (89 MB)

3. AuslogicsDisk Defrag 1.1

Disk fragmentation leads to system slowdowns, PC crashes, slow startup andshutdown and sometimes to system failures. AuslogicsDisk Defrag® is designed forfast optimization of today’s modern hard disks. Get the maximum performance outof your expensive hardware investments. And it’s absolutely FREE.

As far as looks go, the interface in this one was appealing to the generalpublic. It is clean and professional, complete with pie graphs and bar graphswhich illustrate the ratio of used space to free space (already available inWindows Explorer), as well as a before-and-after comparison to indicate comprehend advancement of drive process or mannerof functioning or operating.

Freeware, all Windows versions, 1.4MB

4. IObit Smart Defrag Beta 2.01.

t has fully loaded console and unreserved prominent aspect of something ,including the condition of being automatically operated or controlled anddefragmentation of system files, express defragmentation, is good in this  which ran faster than any other product, butreduced boot time with it also .Two other tests were conducted, including acomprehensive defragmentation, and an express defrag with system directoriesincluded. Both of these methods completely disabled Windows Logoff, and thesystem could not be shut down or rebooted save by a hard shutdown.  Though it is beta product and in futureexpecting more improvement of this product . It shows serious faults in some PCs , so  backups before testing it .

Freeware, all Windows versions, 4.3MB

5. JkDefrag by J.C. Kessels

Not an outstanding performer, but Deeply or markedlyaffected or influenced me It in a reflex manner defragmented all of the drivesit detected, including flash drive and external USB hard drive Thisdefragmenter actually fits on a floppy disk or any other portable device, anddoesn’t require installation. In the cases of the command line and screensaverversions, it’s merely a case of copy-paste and Requiring human effort for anarrangement of parts or elements. The program iscompletely automatic, there are no buttons and no pull-down menu’s.

Free(released under the GNU General Public License) disk defragment and optimizeutility for Windows 2000/2003/XP/Vista/X64. Completely automatic and very easyto use, fast, low overhead, with several optimization strategies, and canhandle floppies and USB disks/sticks. Included are a Windows version, acommandline version (for scheduling by the task scheduler or for use fromadministrator scripts), a screensaver version, a DLL library (for use fromprogramming languages), and versions for Windows X64.

Thereis no “setup” or “install” and no configuration file. Allyou have to do is download the zip and unpack. It contains the following 3programs:

Windows version. This is what most people will use.No installation or configuration necessary, it’s ready to run and willautomatically process all the mounted, writable, fixed volumes on your computer

Commandline version. Specially designed to be run automaticallyin the background, or from administrator scripts. See the “running”chapter below for a list of commandline options, and the “Frequently AskedQuestions” on how to run it automatically with the Windows Scheduler.

JkDefragScreenSaver.scr + JkDefragScreenSaver.exe

Screen saver version. Move (or copy) these two filesto the “system32″ folder on your harddisk (usually”c:\Windows\System32\” or “c:\Winnt\System32\”). It willautomatically become visible in the list of screensavers as “JkDefrag screensaver”and can be used just like any other screensaver (right-click somewhere on yourdesktop and select Properties/Personalize, then select the Screen Saver tab).
on Vista thescreensaver only works with User Account Control turned off (see Control Panel,User Accounts, Turn User Account Control on or off).
Note: screensavers do not lengthen the lifespan of CRT andLCD monitors, contrary to popular belief. It is better to let the monitor beturned off by the Windows energy saving settings.

TheWindows version of JkDefrag shows a high-detail map of the harddisk, refreshed3 times per second. Bottom-left of the window is the beginning of the harddisk. The colors used are:

  • Black: empty
  • Dark-green: in use by unknown data
  • Light-Green: regular files
  • Green: spacehogs
  • Yellow: fragmented
  • Red: unmovable
  • Pink: system files
  • White: busy

6.Contig v1.54

By Mark Russinovich

fromSysInternals, a robust, free, command line utility. It’s superfast fast, andsafe but is a pain to use however eXcessive software has built an excellentuser interface for Contig called “Power Defragmenter” that turnsContig into a really usable product.

These above defragmented tools are useful forperforming a general defragmentation of disks, but while most files aredefragmented on drives processed by these utilities, some files may not be. Inaddition, it is difficult to ensure that particular files that are frequentlyused are defragmented – they may remain fragmented for reasons that arespecific to the defragmentation algorithms used by the defragging product thathas been applied. Finally, even if all files have been defragmented, subsequentchanges to critical files could cause them to become fragmented. Only byrunning an entire defrag operation can one hope that they might be defragmentedagain.

Contig is a single-file defragmenter that attempts to makefiles contiguous on disk. Its perfect for quickly optimizing files that arecontinuously becoming fragmented, or that you want to ensure are in as fewfragments as possible., NT and later, 55KB, NT and later, 397KB

Of the free products Diskeeper 7 Lite  producedthe biggest improvement though to be honest, the margin between all theproducts was negligible .   A final choice may rest more on featuresand the ease of use rather than performance.  In the end the compactJKDefrag  and Diskeeper 7 Lite  wasthe product that I liked most but your choice may well be different.
